Privacy Policy
Steam Companion is a read-only companion dashboard for your Steam account. This page explains what data we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and how you can access, export or delete it. Steam Companion is not affiliated with Valve or Steam.
1. Data we collect
We collect three kinds of data:
- Steam data, via Steam OpenID login. When you log in, Steam confirms your identity (SteamID64) and, depending on your Steam privacy settings, we can read your public profile, owned games library, playtime, wishlist and achievements. We never see or store your Steam password — Steam OpenID never shares it with us.
- App data you create. Preferences (trusted stores, discount targets, default landing page), achievement notes and ongoing goals, wishlist match decisions (confirmed/rejected external store matches), and backlog choices (ignored games, mood filters) are stored in our database and linked to your Steam ID so the app remembers how you use it across devices.
- Basic technical data. A signed, HTTP-only session cookie identifies your login session; it does not expose your Steam ID to page scripts. We also use Vercel Analytics for aggregated, privacy-friendly usage metrics (page views, no cross-site tracking, no ad identifiers).
2. What we don't do
- We never ask for or store your Steam password.
- We never modify your Steam account, library, wishlist or achievements — every Steam-facing feature is read-only.
- We don't collect payment or financial information.
- We don't sell your personal data to third parties.
3. Third-party services we use
To provide the dashboard, we send limited data to:
- Valve / Steam Web API and Steam OpenID — to authenticate you and read the Steam data described above.
- Neon (Postgres hosting) — stores your app preferences, notes and price-history snapshots.
- Vercel — hosts the app and provides aggregated analytics.
- CheapShark, IsThereAnyDeal and store search pages (e.g. Instant Gaming) — we send game titles/IDs to these services to look up prices and deals. We do not send your identity, Steam ID or account details to them.
4. Affiliate links
Some outbound links to external stores (for example GOG, Fanatical, Green Man Gaming, Humble Store, Gamesplanet) are affiliate links. If you buy something after clicking one, Steam Companion may earn a small commission from the store. This never changes the price you pay, and affiliate status never influences which deals or matches are shown to you — matching and deal logic is decided before any affiliate link is applied.
5. Cookies
We use one essential, signed, HTTP-only session cookie to keep you logged in. We do not use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
6. Data retention and deletion
You can disconnect your Steam account at any time from Settings. Disconnecting clears your session cookie. From the same page you can also clear locally stored data and request deletion of your cloud profile data (preferences, notes, price-history and match decisions tied to your Steam ID). We keep data only for as long as your account is connected, plus a short period to fulfil deletion requests.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete the personal data we hold about you. You can exercise most of these directly from Settings (export/import, disconnect, delete), or by contacting us at privacy@your-domain-here.example.com.
8. Children
Steam Companion is not directed at children and is not intended for use by anyone under 16.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the product evolves. We will update the "Last updated" date above when we do.
